from Straight Talk E71 to BYOP

Can I switch my E71's SIM to an unlocked GSM phone now that Straight Talk supports "Bring your own phone"?
I was able to switch phones by moving the SIMs when on other carriers. Does this work the same way or do I need to first register my other phone in some way?
