Bring your own phone???

I just heard about the bring your own phone deal & had a question. I see that you can buy a SIM card & put it in any AT&T or Tmobile phone but what if I already have an active StraightTalk SIM? Can I just put that in an At&t or Tmobile phone or can I only do this when I first activate a Straight Talk account? Oh & how do I know if the At&t or Tmobile phone is a GSM phone & will work with Straight Talk in my area?
