Nexus 5 - AT&T - Hangouts messages severely delayed

Hi, I'm a new straight talk customer.
I recently activated my SIM and put in the proper APN settings - data has been working fine (mostly)
on average speedtest results are: 190ms ping, 6 down, 1.5 up

The problem is if I'm using mobile data, most of the time google hangouts messages will arrive on the phone many minutes late, if at all. Usually around 5 minutes late, but have been up to 18 minutes. Sometimes the messages don't show up at all and then once I join a wifi network they finally come through. With wifi on messages are instant. I've tested this while signed into hangouts on a desktop computer and on the nexus 5 on mobile data. I've tried this with multiple people on different carriers and desktop clients. I can see received messages instantly on the computer while messages are delayed or dont come through at all on mobile data. These are in areas where I have full signal, and the H icon for HSPA is showing, browsing the web or doing anything else involving data works fine. FWIW I know these are AT&T LTE areas, and I have yet to see anything but the H icon on the nexus 5.

Any help would be great, I'd like to stick with straight talk as everything else has been very smooth.

I have the same exact problem and this seems to be issues with new at&t sim card lte settings.
It looks like the data connection is cut when the phone is sleep. Is there any fix yet?

I am having the same problem ever since I got the new StraightTalk sim in October.
I am using the tfdata APN settings.
The delay is not just with Hangouts, I am having a problem with Whatsapp push notifications as well.
Wifi -> no issues; problem is only with mobile network when the phone is on standby (screen off).

Please let me know if you guys have a solution for this.

I got here via a Google search because the wife and I are having the same issue. We have both been ST customers for a while and got Nexus 5's when they were released on 10/31/13. I though this would be good occasion to go ahead and order the new ST AT&T LTE sim cards. The first week of having the Nexus 5's we used the HSPA+ sims and had NO issues. After receiving the LTE sim cards and verifying our APN settings are 100% correct we are both plagued with this problem. It has made hangouts and other apps almost complete useless. Please help!
